Trend Alert: Green at the Golden Globes

While most of us won’t be attending glamorous awards ceremonies and therefore won’t have an excuse to wear a floor-length gown any time soon we figured that we can still take a little red carpet inspiration from the ladies who are.

There was one particular colour that reigned supreme at the Golden Globes on Sunday.  We were green with envy (sorry, couldn’t resist such a puntastic opportunity) at Mila Kunis, Angelina Jolie and Catherine Zeta Jones looking so stunning in emerald green dresses.

So while we just can’t find a genuine occasion to wear a ball gown any time soon we’ve picked out a few items to enhance our own outfits with a little nod to Golden Globe glamour.

Clockwise from left: Flute dress £95.00, LK Bennett; Pearlguide intense eyeliner in Teal, £12.50, MAC;  Bourgois Paris little round pot eyeshadow in Essential #7,  £5.99, Boots;  Veena Gold and Green Teardrop earings, £14.00, at Monsoon;  Eaten Clutch purse wallet £125, Aspinal of London; Cream eyeshadow in Emerald £7.00, Topshop; Carvela shoes £55, Kurt Geiger.

Miss Portman is Miss Dior

There’s something about Natalie Portman.  She’s clearly stunning but also has this strange elusive quality and an intelligence and grace that just makes her so endearing. (Yes, we have a massive style crush on her.)  It’s that, plus the dance skills that took a year of intensive ballet training to achieve, that make her the ideal lead in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan and make her the perfect ambassador for Christian Dior.

Despite once saying she had “an aversion to selling things” Natalie has broken her own rules to be part of their Miss Dior Cherie campaign because of the non-profit work that Dior do.

Here’s a glimpse of the new campaign shots for Miss Dior Cherie and keep an eye out for the TV commercial directed by Sofia Coppola.

Miss Dior Cherie is available to buy at House of Fraser £60.50 for 50 ml. Black Swan is out in cinemas from January 20th.

Men spend longer getting ready than women

David Beckham’s groomed charms may not have been enough to convince FIFA to grant us the World Cup but he has, alongside the likes of Gavin Henson and Peter Andre, managed to influence the average male into spending more time grooming himself.

While for years men mocked women’s lengthy beauty regimes; scoffing as women painstakingly waxed, blow dried and painted parts of their body.  The tables have officially turned.  As the party season gets into full swing it has been revealed that men are spending longer getting ready than women.

Research by Debenhams shows that the average British man will spend 98 minutes getting ready for the Christmas party, while ladies spend a comparatively measly 84 minutes.  While women have perfected their routine through years of practice, men are taking more time with shaving, showering, moisturising and even facials, tanning and manicures, in addition to choosing the perfect outfit.

To help them catch up we’ve picked out a few key items in preparation for this year’s festivities.

Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de L’Homme, £54.00 Debenhams

Shiseido zen for men aftershave lotion, £40.00, House of Fraser

Acqua di Parma Ultimate travel shaving set, £66.00, House of Fraser

Chanel for him, £42.00 – £58.00, Debenhams

Lancome Renergy 3D cream for men, £45.00, Debenhams

Clinique skin supplies for men,£27.00, Boots

How to create a statement red lip look

The red lip is having a bit of a comeback with Cheryl Cole matching her lips to her AIDS ribbon on Saturday’s X Factor and Kylie Minogue letting her lips do all the talking at the Jingle Bell Ball this weekend.

Done right, it’s uber chic, but done wrong, it can look cheap.  So we’ve enlisted the help of MAC’s senior make-up artist Caroline Donnelly to show us how to create the perfect red lipstick look.

Caroline shows that it’s not all about the lip but the whole face.  She’s used Rockers and Rollers Eye Shadows which are part of MAC‘s new Tartan Tale collection.  Aside from gorgeous colours, we’re absolutely loving the packaging which make these perfect stocking fillers.

Reelers and Rockers Eye Shadows, A Tartan Tale Collection, £29.50 from MAC Westfield

How to wear bright red hair

Bold, bright hair shades are red hot right now! We’ve seen a number of brunettes vamping up their look and embracing the redhead vibe.

At our Christmas light switch on, Rihanna said that she’d been wanting to go red for a while and she’s loving her new look. We agree – she looks amazing!

Want to follow in the oh so fashion-forward footsteps of celebs like Rihanna and Cheryl? Here are a few words of advice from hair expert, Danny DeFreitas of Toni&Guy Westfield London.

“Rihanna is working a statement red, but dont forget there are so many shades to choose from. It’s important to find the right one for you!

To achieve that kind of colour intensity on a naturally dark shade, like Rihanna’s, hair often needs to be pre-lightened. It’s advisable to get some expert advice to  see which tone of red suits you best. We offer free colour consultations at Toni&Guy, so please visit us.

For people who love being on trend but feel like this all over colour is perhaps too much of a statement, then think about going for some under-colour techniques. Try working glimmers of red throughout the hair or adding panels. You can still create and achieve something gorgeous, but a lot less maintenance.”

How to wear Rihanna’s vibrant make-up look

Rihanna does strong make-up so well. She’s not one to go for the natural look with a nude palette. She likes to make a statement. We asked the experts at the Make Up Store for some tips on how to make Rihanna’s look work for you.

Emmelie, Make Up Store Westfield London Make Up Artist says:

To get a vibrant look with strong red lips and a dash of colour on the eye, start off by preparing the lips with  a lip exfoliater, moisturiser and primer. I recommend Make Up Store’s Lip Care Mix. Next, even out any redness on and around the lip area with a dash of foundation or concealer applied with a sponge. Follow with a little bit of powder.

Pick a matching lip liner to your lipstick. I’d pair Make Up Store’s Russian red lip pencil together with our China Red lipstick. It’s a perfect combination for vibrant red lips. To achieve that important definition, start lining from the Cupid’s bow and down to the corner of the mouth. Follow your natural lipline, unless you want to add some extra pout. Fill the whole lip with the lippencil for lasting colour. Finally, apply your lipstick with a fine lipbrush.

To recreate her stunning eye look, apply eye primer thinly all over the lid. Follow by dabbing Make Up Store’s eye dust in Bamboo on the middle of the lid and around the globe line. Define with eyepencil between the lashes in the outer corner of the eye. I use Wooden Metal. Use a soft brush to smudge the pencil up and out.

Under the eyebrow and in the corner of the eye, use High Tech Lighter in Magma. This way you get the full depth of your eye shape. Finish by curling your lashes and apply two coats of mascara for a full on evening look.

Sweep Make Up Store’s blusher in Mission onto the apple of the cheeks for added warmth and colour to complete this Rihanna-inspired look.

Your essential make up kit for this look
