Winter wardrobe essential: slouchy jumper

Is there a word more comfortable sounding than slouchy?  While comfort often has to take a back seat in the style stakes this does not have to be so with the slouchy jumper because, as Miss Palermo so stylishly demonstrates, slouchy can be chic.

But before you start stretching out your old jumpers or raiding your boyfriend’s wardrobe head to French Connection where we’re loving their selection of oversized knits like this one for £70. Pair with skinny jeans and ankle boots like these Biba coated jeans (£79) and River Island boots (£60),  grab a satchel – we love this cute Sofia bag by Marc B** from Topshop (£47) – and work slouchy to winter perfection just like Olivia.

A maxi dress for all occasions

It’s no longer the little black dress that we’re covetting but the long black dress.  More of a wardrobe stable than a trend, the black maxi is here to stay and for this season it can go from casual day wear to evening glam.  Here are three of our favourites.

First it’s the monochrome Jane Norman dress featured in this year’s Car Bootique at Westfield London.  It was one of  our favourites backstage and at £35 is a real steal.

The French Connection Aztex Maxi dress is £180 of gorgeous Grecian goddess glam.  It’s on the must have list for Autumn/Winter for sure.

This amazing long sleeve Biba maxi that Catwalk Queen picked out on her shop around the centre recently and is on sale now for £50 at House of Fraser.

Spend or save: Cameron Diaz’s red dress

Cameron Diaz certainly knows how to light up a room.  While everyone else at the premiere of The Green Hornet played it safe with black and neutral colours, Cameron stood out in a bright red dress matched with this season’s statement red lips.

We’ve decided a red dress in the wardrobe has to be about as essential as an LBD.  Cameron’s gorgeous one is by Azzaro at £785 but here are two of our other favourites from Biba and this version, which is frankly a downright steal, from River Island.

Left to right: Azzaro £785, River Island Westfield London £49.99, Biba at House of Fraser Westfield London, £285

Sixties style

Looking for a little retro inspiration? Step back in time with 60s-inspired pieces available from some of your favourite high street retailers.

There’s something wonderfully feel good about the 1960s. Ok, so it wasn’t all rosy, but they always seem such halcyon days. And the style is seeing a revival. After watching ‘Made in Dagenham’, we’ve fallen for the shift dresses, fabulous false eyelashes and beehive hairstyles all over again.

Left to right: Camel 60s swing dress, Warehouse £35; Diamante trim black shift dress, Topshop £55

The pieces are oh so flattering too. A shift dress can disguise a midriff that’s carrying a few extra chocolate biscuit induced-pounds! An A-line skirt skims over a curvaceous hip. And a big animal print faux fur coat will detract from anything else concealed within it!

Left to right: Animal print 60s tunic dress, Dorothy Perkins £29.50, Leopard print faux fur coat, Biba at House of Fraser. £165

The A-line skirt below ticks so many on-trend boxes. It’s mid-length which is bang on this season. It’s camel coloured – again another trend tick. Plus, it’s got that 60s vibe about it. We love it!

Left to right: Stripe top, Oasis £30; Midi-length A line skirt, Warehouse £45

Now, just grab your false eyelashes (we recommend you have them applied at Shu Uemura, House of Fraser) and start backcombing your hair into a beehive that would impress even Amy Winehouse.

The return of Biba

The iconic British fashion label which defined the look of the 1960s and 1970s is back for 2010 at House of Fraser. Biba oozes glamour and decadence. It’s super-stylish with an added dose of British eccentricity.

And who could be the face for such a brand? It’s the ever stylish, quintessentially British Daisy Lowe!

Biba may be a heritage brand, but the new collection is definitely contemporary and on trend for A/W 2010. Look out for the eye-catching leopard print coat, the military jacket and the fluffy marabou jackets in pretty nude shades.

Left to right: Leopard print coat, £165 and bag £125; Military mid-length coat, £290 and bag £250.

The eveningwear collection is striking too. You’ll find decadent velvet gowns alongside sparkling embellished tunics. The mix of textures is fabulous, so mix and match between soft, fluffy faux furs and sequinned or silk dresses.

Left to right: Print dress £125; Fluffy jacket £175 and embellished dress £135.

Biba launches in House of Fraser on 9th September.
