Autumn/Winter Wardrobe Dilemmas

As the season and the trends change so do our wardrobes. Our team from Westfield Derby decided to ask their Facebook fans what their wardrobe dilemmas were and we’ve put together some style notes for them to help them out.

Dilemma 1:  I have a big party, a little black dress but only £20 til payday to dress it up!

All you need now is killer accessories.  Keep it simple and get a couple of real standout pieces.  With £20 we suggest some gorgeous statement jewellery to really make you feel like a million dollars.  Our go to for brilliant pieces on a budget comes from the designers at Debenhams.  Try a Butterfly by Matthew Williamson skull necklace for only £8.00 and these Star by Julien Macdonald crystal earrings for £12.

Dilemma 2: I need some autumn outfits for the office which are fashionable but warm

Colder weather doesn’t have to mean hiding under knits and thick tights.  Shirts and blouses are still a staple and to keep warm try insulating from underneath rather than covering up with jumpers.  M&S  have some great thermal vests that will keep you warm under sleek shirts while jersey dresses which are incredibly flattering, elegant and most importantly warm.  A jacket over a short sleeved cashmere knit is also a winner. And, of course, autumn winds mean that boots are back!  Try Jones the Bootmaker or Schuh for sleek ankle boots as oppose to knee highs for this season.

Dilemma 3: I can’t seem to find trendy and at the same time comfortable clothes, which is really important being a new mum

Luckily trendy doesn’t have to be uncomfortable.  Maxi skirts and dresses which are incredibly comfortable and flattering on most shapes are still very much on trend.  This season’s catwalks showcased classic pieces like polo necks and simple skirts in autumnal shades of burgundies and you can find these on the high street at Monsoon and Oasis.  Big oversized jumpers (quite possibly the most comfortable wardrobe item ever invented) were on the likes of the Stella McCartney and Balenciaga catwalks and are very much on trend for this season and you’ll find some great warmers in Zara.  Don’t feel like you have to wear any trend that you think is in. Whatever you wear, feeling comfortable and confident is the most important thing and you will look like you own any trend if you feel good in it.

Dilemma 4: I’m between maternity and normal clothes, what’s the best style to go for?

While the temptation to squeeze back into those jeans is inevitable the best thing to wear when you’re in between sizes, skirts and maxi dresses.  Gypsy style skirts, such as those from Apricot or H&M, make a bit of a come back this season and can be a blessing for anyone trying to feel comfortable and fashionable.  Rather than going for completely fitted dresses, wear draped dresses or ones that fall from just below the bust line leaving plenty of breathing room.  Kaftans are also back in fashion so you can hide any tell tale bumps while showing off your legs in elasticated jeans or trousers.

Dilemma 5: Where can I find clothes for plus sizes other than Evans and Ann Harvey?

A lot of stores haves started expanding their plus size ranges of late.  M&S have some really gorgeous clothes in this season which come in all sizes.  We love the new season collections in Dorothy Perkins particularly the jackets and brightly coloured dresses which go up to a size 22 while Next have an extensive plus size selection so most of our favourite pieces come in everything from size 8 to size 26 including some flattering evening dresses like this one shoulder body shaper dress with control slip for extra sleek lines.

Rebelling against foundation with tinted moisturiser

Product: You Rebel tinted moisturiser by Benefit

Available from: House of Fraser/Debenhams and Boots

Price:£23.50

What it claims to do:
Benefit You Rebel is a defiantly different tinted moisturiser. Will leave your complexion healthy and protected with a hint of colour. It contains antioxidants, aloe vera and allantoin for soft, supple skin all year long. Contains SPF 15+.

Review:
I’ve never used a tinted moisturiser in my life, preferring a medium – full coverage foundation instead. After recently spotting this product on many blogs I decided to give it a go for lazy weekend days when I’m only pottering around my local neighbourhood and for days when I just don’t feel like looking so ‘made up’. It comes in two shades (You Rebel and You Rebel Lite) and I find that it blends into my skin really easily, providing a nice glow that tends to only come about from a primer such as Clairns Flash Balm.

Final verdict
I will be definitely buying this again. I can’t believe I didn’t discover it sooner! If you have blemishes or spots you can always cover that specific area with a concealer or higher coverage foundation.

Holiday Beauty Essentials

Holidays are wonderful things but if there’s one thing that makes going away a bit of a pain it’s having to leave things behind our beauty products. A lot of women (and men) would agree that ALL beauty items are essential.  Alas, there is a weight limit and if you’re going for hand luggage, a size limit, so we have to cut back. Still here are some of our favourite handy travel items.

All-in-one

Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream is a beauty essential any time of the year and this sun cream pack for £29 from Debenhams is one of our favourites. The After The Rain travellers set from Debenhams is also a very pretty compact pack with all you need.  Plus it’s a steal at £5.62.

Mix and match

If you, like us, are obsessed with all things miniature, stock up on Superdrug’s mini essentials.  Our favourites are the Palmer’s Cocoa butter,  this Ooh La La travel pack of washing and lotioning essentials, the tea tree exfoliating wash which will keep your skin free of dead cells and clear for the sun.  John Frieda’s travel packs for blondes and brunettes are perfect but always take your Batiste dry shampoo in handy travel size just in case.

Can’t live without

If you really can’t bear to be without your products then just take them with you but in handy travel-sized bottles like this spray bottle from Boots for only £1.55 a pop or this pack of four from Debenhams (£7.99).

Style Notes from The Style PA

We asked blogger extraordinaire Jenny Hayden, otherwise known as The Style PA, about what gets her stylish senses excited, what she’ll be wearing this season and what she hopes never comes back into fashion.

How would you define your own style?

I dress for my mood. One day I’ll be wearing a feminine, floral dress, the next it will more masculine tailoring.       I like to have fun with clothes so the more choice in my wardrobe the better.

What makes a person stylish?

Knowing what suits you is a big part of being stylish. Style isn’t just about following fashion trends, it’s about finding the style that looks good on you. Sometimes that might just happen to be the latest trend or must-have piece, but if it isn’t I don’t think that matters.

Who is your style-crush right now?

Probably Diane Kruger, she always looks effortlessly elegant but takes risks too, like wearing statement vintage pieces.

What item can you not live without?

I always need my Android phone to hand. I use Twitter all the time and rely on Google Maps for finding my way to events. Plus I can read my favourite blogs and manage emails on the go too.

Is there anyone or anything that inspires your style?

Magazines, blogs, friends, work… everything can be an influence. A lot of the time though it simply comes from seeing someone on the street and thinking, ‘that’s a good idea’.

What is this season’s must-have item?
Pleats have to be my must-have for SS11. Sheer pleated skirts were everywhere at London Fashion Week so they are definitely the style to snap up.

Name one crime against fashion.
The scrunchie! Remember those horrid velvet ones? It amazes me that people still wear them and I constantly fear they’ll come back into fashion one day.

If you could give one piece of style advice what would it be?
Don’t buy it if it doesn’t fit! Clothes always look better when they fit and flatter your shape. Plus, go for regular bra fittings, it really does make all the difference.

Royal Wedding fever. Careful, it’s catching

Some of the team at Westfield HQ have been  trying to avoid wedding fever others others have embraced it.  I, one of avoiders, scoffed at the masks, mugs and tea towels that had been appearing in shops and in the office over the recent weeks.

But over the weekend as the bunting began to fill the streets, the sun shone and I walked past a window filled with a giant picture of Wills and Kate smiling at everyone, it finally got to me and I bought my first piece of Royal Wedding memorabilia.

While there are plenty of questionable items of memorabilia out there, there are also plenty of stylish ways to celebrate a piece of British history.

This commemorative blend from Twinings is available at Waitrose and once finished the tin makes a lovely keepsake.  And with tea, one must have biscuits and one sees no reason why not to have them in this rather pretty tin from Marks and Spencer.

If you want a proper piece of history then buy a proper piece of commemorative memorabilia from Royal Worcester, available at Debenhams. Your great great grandchildren will thank you for it.

The Union Jack has had its fashion day – think 90s Ginger Spice – but it’s having a little comeback of sorts. One of the nicest takes on it comes from Ted Baker. The scarf, £85, and the purse, £99.00, offer a subtle nod to British heritage without being overbearing and will last past the whole wedding hype.

Kelly Osbourne’s fifties’ rebel style

Remember when Kelly Osbourne’s look  was all moody goth? Not anymore.  The little lady has been ticking all the style boxes and no more so than when she stepped out recently looking more Marilyn Monroe than Marilyn Manson.

We love the barbie-doll blonde hair and baby pink  against her skull tattoos, studded bag and a look that says: “Mess with me and die.” Miss Osbourne, we applaud you.  And when we applaud, we steal.

Here’s how to get Kelly’s look:

Pleated shift dress, Rare at Topshop, £44.00;  White Lexis Blazer, LK Bennett, £165; Vintage Henrietta Brooch, Monsoon, £10; Beige platform courts, River Island £64.99; Black Olsen Hoop & stud bag, Mischa Barton at Debenhams £79; Domed Cocktail ring, Jon Richard at Debenhams, £10

Transitional nails: nude

As you may know we love our bold nail colours here at Westfield HQ but sometimes we do like to keep our fingernails a little more understated.  Rather than forgoing nail colour altogether we’ve decided to invest in some understated colour for the inbetween season we like to call Winter-Spring.  Complementing this season’s camel and mink shades while working perfectly with next season’s all whites and brights, here are some of our favourite nudes.

Dior Vernis in Nude Chic, £17.50, House of Fraser, Nails Inc in Basil Street, £11, Debenhams, Revlon Nude Chic, £3.99, Boots

Make a statement with cocktail rings

Rings are big and bold this season, adorning the manicured hands of everyone from the Minogues to Heidi Klum to Blake Lively.  Wherever we look, we’re seeing hands covered in rocks the size of small planets, giant flowers and some serious bling.  If you’re thinking – this is no weather for big rings? How will we fit our gloves on? – we have the answer to that too, well actually Kylie does: gloves on first, rings on top.  Genius.

So to embrace the trend for embellishment in a big way we’ve picked out some of our favourites from designer to high street.  Enjoy.
Flower powerLeft to right: Gold Flower Ring, £9.99 River Island; Ring boutique textured flower ring, £35.00, House of Fraser;  Flower cluster ring, £16.50 Topshop.
