Trend alert: 90s Grunge

It had to happen at some point.  The 70s and 80s have had their come back for the last couple of seasons as every decade does and as 2012 kicks off, so does a return back to the days of crop tops and grunge -  say hello (again) to the 90s.

While many of us who did live through the decade may not look too fondly on a number of trends – think Spice Girl platforms (shudder) – 90s grunge was the look that defined a generation.

Topshop have got it spot on with their latest collection of rock-inspired t-shirts, denim and leather.

Get the look

Hippy Girl Photo Tee: £18,

Peace bra top £12,

Check grandad shirt £28,

Flat top plastic sunglasses:  £16,

April Nubock flat Chelsea, £62,

Black leather crossbody £68,

Moto Denim hotpants £30,

All Topshop

How to wear it

Do plenty of denim.  Long, short, fitted, a little baggy, as jeans, as a shirt, as a scarf…wherever, it just needs to look like it’s been lived in a little.

Midriffs are back in vogue so if you can bear to bare it then, well, do.

Checked shirts – wear over crop top or with denim shorts and boots for the perfect 90s grunge look.

Boots are flat or with a small chunky heel, ankle length and mean business.

Donna Ida’s Style Notes

Denim queen Donna Ida shares her style secrets with us.

How would you define your style?
My style is basic with luxe accessories. Jeans are my uniform, so I wear them everyday from J Brand to Paige to Mih to Nobody…I have so many different pairs to choose from. I wear them with basic tees from Kain or LNA and always wear some signature jewellery and super high heels.
What makes a person stylish?
I believe style is all about confidence. When you feel good in what you are wearing, it really shows.
Who is your style crush right now?
I have a few – Diane Kruger, Rachel Zoe, Nicole Ritchie.
What item can you not live without?
My black Stella McCartney jacket is a classic, it goes with everything.
Is there anyone or anything that inspires your style?
Just simple chic women. I like a timeless look with modern updates.
What is this season’s must have?
Coloured skinnies have literally flown off the shelves at Donna Ida in every colour you can think of including hot pink, red, blue and green.
Name one crime against fashion:
Wearing something you’re not comfortable in……and velour tracksuits.
If you could give one piece of style advice what would it be?
Invest in good quality basics and build your wardrobe on those. Start with jeans!

Men’s denim trend: Military chic

While women carry around their lives in their bags, men tend to carry around their lives in their pockets. That’s the inspiration behind a series of videos to mark the launch of the Corbin jean from Firetrap.

What’s in your pocket?

The seven pocket jean has been crafted to combine aspects of military chinos and pre 1900 denim workwear.   With significant attention to detail but at £70.00 these jeans feel like a premium jean for a fraction of the price tag.

Do The Denim Double!

For years it was the preserve of ageing rockers, but suddenly doubling up on the denim front is tres chic!

From Alexa Chung to Amber Valetta, we’ve spied many an A-lister rocking the double denim trend. Even the boys are getting in on this one, with the likes of Zac Efron sporting a denim duo, so it’s truly a unisex trend. However, it’s a trend to be cautious of. Get it wrong and you risk looking like an extra from a bad ’80s Brat Pack film. Get it right and you’ll be the chicest person in the room – we promise.

The secret to looking more like Alexa and less like Status Quo is to mix and match your shades. A loose pale denim shirt for example looks great teamed with dark denim jeans or jeggings. Or add a light denim biker jacket with a dark denim skirt.

Just remember not to overload on the denim – lay off the denim accessories or you will risk looking like an ’80s reject!

L-R: Baggy shirt, £20, Next; High heeled trainers, £110, Office; Denim jeggings, £18, Dorothy Perkins; Biker jacket, £39.50, M&S; Mini skirt, £20, New Look.
