New Cid Glow Shimmer Powder

Product review: New Cid i-glow Compact Shimmer Powder

Available from: House of Fraser

Price: £24

What it claims to do:
This shimmer powder from new premium brand New Cid glides smoothly over skin to add radiance and shimmer.

Review:
I’ve never been a huge fan of shimmers, finding that often they make me look a little too, well, shimmery.  But I don’t like to dismiss things till I’ve tried them and this one had pretty looking packaging so I gave it a go. I can now officially say that I’m a shimmer convert.  What I love about this particular compact is that it doesn’t make you sparkle like a 12 year old with their first make up kit and it doesn’t make you look too ‘shiny’.  What it does add is a subtle, healthy-looking irradescent glow that complements your usual powder and blush.  It’s extremely light so you can dust on lightly for a touch of the aforementioned radiance or layer up for a more noticeable affect.   It also doubles up as a highlighter for eyes and lasts for ages so well worth the price tag.

Final verdict
An excellent multi-functional product from what is turning out to be a really strong brand.  If you’re looking to add one special item to your make up bag, make it this one.

Bobbi Brown launches Extra Repair Serum

Your grandmother will probably tell you that in her day all she used to wash her face with was a bit of soap and water, none of this mambypampy stuff you get today.

Yes, well while she may be wise, until we’ve found a soap that contains toner, moisturiser, exfoliator and pumps our skin full of vitamins and antioxidants as well as being a suitable cleanser there’s just no way that advice is going to stick.

We’re beauty product addicts in the Westfield office, trying out creams, cleansers and make up to our skin’s, if not our granny’s, delight and when we hear of a new product on the market we get a little excited.  Currently exciting us is Bobby Brown with news of a serum to add to their already substantial skincare offering.

The Extra Repair Serum rolls out nationwide next month at House of Fraser, priced at £60, and contains Vitamin C and a peptide which supposedly can help soften the look of lines and wrinkles over time. Our beauty panel is on the case.  Will report back as soon as we’ve tried it!

Miss Portman is Miss Dior

There’s something about Natalie Portman.  She’s clearly stunning but also has this strange elusive quality and an intelligence and grace that just makes her so endearing. (Yes, we have a massive style crush on her.)  It’s that, plus the dance skills that took a year of intensive ballet training to achieve, that make her the ideal lead in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan and make her the perfect ambassador for Christian Dior.

Despite once saying she had “an aversion to selling things” Natalie has broken her own rules to be part of their Miss Dior Cherie campaign because of the non-profit work that Dior do.

Here’s a glimpse of the new campaign shots for Miss Dior Cherie and keep an eye out for the TV commercial directed by Sofia Coppola.

Miss Dior Cherie is available to buy at House of Fraser £60.50 for 50 ml. Black Swan is out in cinemas from January 20th.

Spend or save: Cameron Diaz’s red dress

Cameron Diaz certainly knows how to light up a room.  While everyone else at the premiere of The Green Hornet played it safe with black and neutral colours, Cameron stood out in a bright red dress matched with this season’s statement red lips.

We’ve decided a red dress in the wardrobe has to be about as essential as an LBD.  Cameron’s gorgeous one is by Azzaro at £785 but here are two of our other favourites from Biba and this version, which is frankly a downright steal, from River Island.

Left to right: Azzaro £785, River Island Westfield London £49.99, Biba at House of Fraser Westfield London, £285

Clinique kiss it better: New lip glosses for charity

We love Clinique lip glosses. They make lips look shiny and juicy without being too gloopy and they come in gorgeous colours. We’re big fans of their latest range of Vitamin C Lip Smoothie Antioxidant lip colours coming in  Pink Me Up (that’s pink to you an me), Mango-thon (pinky orange), Goodness Grapecious, (dark pink), and Nude-tricious (you get the idea). These look great while nourishing our poor London-weather-batttered lips which could certainly do with a bit of nutrition.

Now Clinique has created a limited edition Smoothie Kisses Lip Gloss Set,  which includes all four glosses, and is part of a campaign with Great Ormond Street Hospital to raise money for children with cancer called Kiss It Better.

The  glosses are available exclusively to House of Fraser at  a price of £22.50 for the set, with £4 donated to the Kiss It better Appeal (£2 from Clinique and £2 from House of Fraser), so you can enjoy sumptuous lips while donating to a very worthy cause.

Transitional nails: nude

As you may know we love our bold nail colours here at Westfield HQ but sometimes we do like to keep our fingernails a little more understated.  Rather than forgoing nail colour altogether we’ve decided to invest in some understated colour for the inbetween season we like to call Winter-Spring.  Complementing this season’s camel and mink shades while working perfectly with next season’s all whites and brights, here are some of our favourite nudes.

Dior Vernis in Nude Chic, £17.50, House of Fraser, Nails Inc in Basil Street, £11, Debenhams, Revlon Nude Chic, £3.99, Boots

La Prairie Essential Exfoliator

Product review: La Prairie Essential Exfoliator

Available from: House of Fraser

Price: £46

What it claims to do:
Exfoliate beyond daily cleansing to remove dulling surface cells, clear and refine the appearance of pores and clarify the skin. Botanical extracts soothe, calm and purify the skin and help prevent breakouts. It also improves the skin`s ability to accept and absorb complementary treatments.

Review:
With cleansing products I’ve often found that the less expensive work just as well at cleaning the face as those at the higher end of the price range. The difference with this one is that it feels less like an evening cleanse and more like an evening facial.  Without being abrasive the product thoroughly cleanses, which means less need to scrub away at the face afterwards, and after only the first time I used it my skin felt amazingly smooth.  After a few days of using the product my skin feels and looks noticeably better.

Final verdict
A cleansing product that is actually worth the price tag.  Like many higher end products, a little goes a long way making this is a great investment for your skin.

New Year’s Eve party outfit

All the Christmas parties are done and dusted and now there’s just the one big one left to finish off the year and for that,  we need the perfect outfit.

The sales are full of gorgeous dresses but we’ve fallen in love with this white beaded dress from Karen Millen.  Continuing this season’s trend for metallics and embellishment while welcoming next  season’s all-white trend this is the perfect dress to say ‘goodbye 2010, hello 2011′ in and with the price slashed from £250 to £75 it’s like an extra Christmas present to yourself (well that’s what we’re telling ourselves anyway).

While it needs little accessorising, we’ve picked out a few other items to finish it off.  With all the sales on this £565 outfit actually only costs £215.90!

Left to right: Frayed silk shrug, £150.00 – £44.95; Metal stone bracelet £65.00 – 44.95; Beaded dress in white £250 – £75.00, all at Karen Millen; Ravel Sequin shoes, £78.00 – £40.00, Barratts; Untold Satin clutch £22 – £11, House of Fraser.

Elle Macpherson to launch ‘Bare and Bold’ lingerie

Elle Macpherson is adding to her very successful lingerie brand with a new collection entitled ‘Bare and Bold’.

The model known as ‘the body’ is launching a new collection of underwear designed to be worn under T-shirts.  As well as white and black the bras will come in edible-sounding colours of  strawberry, lemon-drop and pistachio.

Judging by her previous Intimate ranges at House of Fraser, these are likely to be another huge success and we can’t wait to get our hands on them.

Guide to party wear

Here at Style Notes we often try and find ways to feel like a million pounds without actually having to spend a million pounds, particularly now with all the parties happening around us.  So we’ve enlisted the help of House of Fraser personal shopper Diane McCarthy for a helping hand in party season style.  Check out her guide to partywear.

We love the Mawi pieces as seen on the likes of Alexa Chung,  Cheryl Cole and Rihanna, which would give any simple dress that extra wow factor.

Left to right: Tube necklace £350, grecian knot necklace £135, skull necklace £380; all Mawi at House of Fraser
