NEW – Neal’s Yard Remedies cosmetics

We’ve been fans of NYR skincare products for a while now. We always feel so good about ourselves when we use their products – good for our skin and good for the environment too. But now, we have a whole new reason to feel good.

This week sees the launch of Neal’s Yard Remedies’ first cosmetics range. It is the first collection to include Soil Association certified cosmetics. It uses organic ingredients and it’s pretty too!

Mineral make-up has been a hero of the beauty world for a while now. The new NYR range includes mineral eye shadow in four natural shades – barley, sage, camellia and truffle – and mineral eye liners too.

The lip glosses come in six colours. They contain organic oil to keep lips super soft, but it’s the sweet, subtle taste of orange that got us slathering gloss all over our lips.

Pop into the store to find out more and to get a consultation from the Neal’s Yard Remedies experts.

Vampish lips

Feeling brave? One of the hot make-up trends of the season is purple. Purple lips, purple eyes, purple nails but preferably one at a time.

It can be a hard colour to wear, but it can also make a really dramatic impact if you do it right. Rihanna shows you how it’s done. She totally rocks this look.

Fairer complexions should look out for the berry shades whereas those with a darker skintone can go for the harsher, bluish shades.

Our tip is to add some rosy blush to your cheeks to avoid looking totally goth. Also, reapply your lip colour regularly to make sure you don’t look like you’ve had one glass of red wine too many!

Left to right: Make Up Store Lipstick in Magic Print, £12.50; Make Up Store Gloss in Plum, £8; Topshop Lipstick in Vamp, £8.

Long live summer

Here at Westfield HQ, we’re not ready for summer to be over. We’re desperate to keep that warm, sunny glow going for a while longer.

When you think of orange make-up, you may think of bad fake tan. Orange skintone is not one we covet. Being Tango’d is so last decade. But, despite what you may think, you really can wear orange make-up. In fact, orange lips look great with a tan. They also work really well on with fair skins – just experiment to find the shade that works for you.

The same can be said for orange eye shadow. Play around to find out what suits you – peach, coral or citrus. Not feeling that bold? Make a statement with some bright orange nail polish.

Left to right: Orange eyeshadow, MAC £11; Orange Nails, Topshop £5; L’Oreal Glamshine lipgloss in Sheer Peach, Superdrug £6.99; Citrus lipstick, Make Up Store £12.50.

Fresh, citrus fragrances can bring back those sunny, holiday memories too. One waft of scent and your mind is cast back to Mediterranean orange groves or even just that fruity cocktail you sipped on from your sunlounger. Orange fragrance is known for its uplifting properties too, so it’s ideal to combat post-holiday blues. Start your day with a citrus-scented shower gel or spray on a luscious perfume, and you’ll feel brighter instantly.

Left to right: Boss Orange Sunset EDT, The Perfume Shop £39.99 (75ml); Satsuma shower gel, The Body Shop £6 (250ml); Sunny shower, L’Occitane £12.50 (250ml); Orange Blossom solid perfume, Lush £5.50.

Benefit Erase Paste

Beauty Review: Benefit Erase Paste

Price: £18.50
Available from: Debenhams

What it claims to do:
Benefit erase paste. Available in three shades to suit your individual skin tone, this brightener and concealer is great for getting rid of dark circles and to highlight to give your skin a natural looking radiance. Contained in a adorable little pot, the erase paste comes with a spatula and is easy to blend and apply for great coverage.

Our reviewer says:
This is a pretty serious concealer. It really does cover up blemishes and discolouration, but you only need to apply a small amount otherwise it looks caked on. Make sure you blend it in properly too, otherwise it can accentuate those little lines around your eyes. That said, it really does the trick. My undereye area certainly looked a whole lot less dark when I used it.

It comes with a handy little spatula which makes application so much easier and more hygienic. Plus, it can be a little tricky trying to get the right amount of concealer on your finger in that little pot.

A little really does go a long way. It’s a pretty heavy duty concealer, so not necessarily for everyday usage. My small pot has lasted months and months, which is makes it all the better value for money too.

Final verdict:
If you want to hide dark circles, redness or nasty blemishes then this will do it. It’s easy to apply and one small pot last for ages. With this great concealer, no-one needs to know just how late you were out last night!

Rituals nail polish

Beauty Review: Rituals long-lasting nail varnish in Smart Rose

Price: £7.90
Available from: Rituals

What it claims to do:
Long-lasting nail varnish enriched with the power and shine of gemstones.
Intense, shiny colours based on pure gemstones.
Enriched with the hardest gemstone Ruby, ideal for strengthening your nails.
Easy to apply in one movement.

What the reviewer said:
This really is long lasting and surprisingly chip-resistant. I actually asked the manicurist at La Monde nails to use it as my colour for that day and she was also impressed with how it went on. Personally, I did not love the colour as it was very pink and had a touch of the Pat Butcher about it! I was really impressed with how it long it lasted though – at least a week.

Final verdict
I would definitely use a Rituals nail polish again, but I’d like to try another colour.

Benefit instant brow pencil

Beauty Review: Benefit instant brow pencil in dark

Price: £14
Available from: Debenhams, House of Fraser and Boots
What it claims to do
Creates soft, subtle, long-wearing definition in an instant.

Our reviewer says
It does absolutely what it says. I got married recently and a lot of my time was spent panicking about my stray, fairly non-existent brows. I discovered this pencil and it has transformed my eyebrows so they finally frame my face. It comes in two shades and I love that it’s a lovely soft brown and not a harsh black. My small criticism is that I have to sharpen it too often.

Final verdict
A great product and one I’ll be sticking with!
