Rituals nail polish

Beauty Review: Rituals long-lasting nail varnish in Smart Rose

Price: £7.90
Available from: Rituals

What it claims to do:
Long-lasting nail varnish enriched with the power and shine of gemstones.
Intense, shiny colours based on pure gemstones.
Enriched with the hardest gemstone Ruby, ideal for strengthening your nails.
Easy to apply in one movement.

What the reviewer said:
This really is long lasting and surprisingly chip-resistant. I actually asked the manicurist at La Monde nails to use it as my colour for that day and she was also impressed with how it went on. Personally, I did not love the colour as it was very pink and had a touch of the Pat Butcher about it! I was really impressed with how it long it lasted though – at least a week.

Final verdict
I would definitely use a Rituals nail polish again, but I’d like to try another colour.

True blue

Blue is the definitely the colour right now – maybe add a smattering of gold to be politically correct.

After weeks, if not months, of grey, it’s time to break out the vibrant colours. It’s time for change. We’re not talking nautical navy or neutral ice blue, we mean the vivid, strong, royal blue. Add some energy to your wardrobe with a burst of blue.

It’s an easy colour to wear too. Whether you’re fair or dark, blonde or brunette – you can work the blue look. Be bold with a bright blue dress or trenchcoat. If that feels a bit too much, start with smaller touches – a belt, shoes, jewellery or bag. Blue looks great with this season’s utlitiy shades - khaki, cream, black or white.

The blue craze even extends to your make-up. We’re big  fans of blue nails. Blue also works well on your eyes – just be careful not to end up looking like Pat Butcher!

Here are a few of our favourite blue items to brighten up your summer wardrobe.

True blue fashion

L-R Feather drop earrings, £7 Accessorize; Belted A-line skirt, £35 Topshop; Ruffle front shift dress, £60 Oasis; Rimmel 60 seconds nail polish in Blue my mind, £3.49; Suede ruffle platform heel, £40 Miss Selfridge.

Pretty Pastels

Just as the catwalk saw an explosion of pretty pastels, pretty girlie colours are also hitting beauty counters.

It all started with Chanel’s Jade nail polish – a soft green shade that took the fashion world by storm with celebs such as Lily Allen sporting green nails, while us mere mortals were put on a waiting list for this must-have shade! Thankfully, the beauty world has taken note and made a whole array of gorgeous pastel hues are now readily available to use.

Nail polish is one of the easiest ways to get in on this trend. We love M&S’s Essentials Nail Polish in green – not only is it pretty much a match for the Chanel shade, but it also comes in at the bargain buster price of just £2.50. If green isn’t your thing, try a pale blue or a soft yellow – they may sound crazy, but they look gorgeous on.

On the eyes, pale pastel eyeshadow is one of the easiest trends to way. Sweep on your favourite shade – whether it be pink, blue or green – and just add lashings of mascara. Complete this pretty look with a soft pink blusher and candy pink lip gloss – mmm, it’s good enough to eat.

To help you on the path to pastel enlightenmnent, we’ve picked out our favourite products available to buy now – but which ones will you be wearing?

L-R: Michael Kors blusher in Sunset Pink, £23, Estée Lauder; Pale green nail polish, £2.50, M&S; Natural Radiance Eye Palette, £13, No 7; Yellow nail varnish, £13, Illamasqua; Stop Violence In The Home Hi-Shine Lip Treatment, £9.25, The Body Shop

Cheryl Cole Gets Deep…

Don’t worry – popstar and style icon Cheryl Cole hasn’t suddenly gone all philosophical on us. The deep we’re talking about refers to her fabulous nails!

While watching The X Factor the other day, we spotted Cheryl’s gorgeous deep violet nail colour and immediately set off on a search for a similar hue. It’s a great colour for this time of the year – dark enough to be sultry and glam, but different enough to stand out of the crowd.

The best match we’ve found is Nail Inc’s Belgrave Place. This deep inky violet colour thankfully doesn’t come with the A-list price tag though and can be picked up from House Of Fraser and Debenhams for just £10.50. So stock up now and come the festive season, you can have nails as starry as Cheryl’s!

Beauty Treats: Nailing It!

In times of recession, it’s been proven that women spend on small luxuries like lipstick and pampering sessions, such as facials or manicures. We may not have as much money as we used to, but we still like to look nice! Not so long ago, it was fairly unusual to go and get your nails done but with the advent of places like Nails Inc, getting your nails manicured is something to fit in around your shopping.

Next time you decide to get the pro treatment however, don’t make do with a regular file and polish. This season, nails are becoming more spectacular. Some of our favourite designs include the infamous double Chanel C, leopard print and crystal-studded, however, the look we’re really hankering after at the moment is a favourite with burlesque beauty Dita Von Teese – the half moon manicure.

 half-moon-manicure

This 1920s nail trend invented by a manicurist at MGM Studios has had a revival thanks to the return of burlesque. We love the simplicity of it, yet the cute half moons makes it stand out from the regular polished crowd!

Make like Dita and mix a deep red with gold half moons (we love Maybelline’s Deep Red and Mavala’s Gold Diamond), or copy Dior who sent their models down the catwalk with a striking purple and white combo.

This is one manicure however that is probably best left to the professionals – unless you have a very steady hand of course!
