Going to new lengths: the midi

If there’s one thing we’re seeing an abundance of pouring into the ‘new in’ sections of our stores it’s the midi skirt.  Half way between the daring mini and the floaty maxi, the midi is definitiely the go to length for next season.

While the midi may spring to mind far-too-sensible work attire and skirts we used to desperately try and shorten at school this new selection is far from fusty in its bright colours and floaty fabrics. Miss Selfridge have a particularly fab collection of styles. We love.

Bbue Topshop £38, red pleated, Oasis £42, Mustard crepe Miss Selfridge £22

Oasis goes all Mad Men for New Vintage Collection!

Oasis have launched their ’50s-inspired New Vintage Collection in select stores, including Westfield London, today.

Featuring kitsch floral prints with a modern edge, the designers were inspired by Mad Men for this rather special capsule collection.

The collection includes five colourful print dresses ranging from £110 to £150, and accompanying silk scarves and evening bags make up the colleection.  This season’s modern florals are teamed with  a classic ’50s silhouette for the new vintage look.

Our favourite has to be the yellow floral dress with the sweetheart neckline which they’ve paired with clashing print pumps and a silk scarf for their campaign shot.  So pretty and perfect for all the summer events coming up!

Brits go back to black: Cheryl Cole and Adele celebrity style

We’ve been getting so excited about all the spring fashion coming in and getting used to seeing bright colours on the red carpet that we almost forgot that it was still winter.  Then it rained on our hair and we remembered.  Still, it was good to see two of our favourite Brits sporting long sleeved semi-gothic black numbers at the BRITS last night.

Adele, who gave an incredible performance last night, chose a sparkly number with sheer sleeves while Cheryl Cole also sparkled in her Stella McCartney floor-length long-sleeved dress with smokey eyes and swept back hair.

Here are four of our favourite Brits inspired dresses from the stores,

Sheer sleeves dress, £20; black lace open back dress, £30;  both Dorothy perkins

Samantha sequin dress, £160, French connection; baroque beaded dress, £85, Oasis

Behind the Scenes: Oasis SS11

We’ve had a look at behind the scenes at River Island and now here’s a peak at what went on at the Oasis Spring/Summer 2011 shoot.

We’ve already gushed a little about their florals but we’re also big fans of the camel and white look they’re featuring in the campaign images.

Go floral for Spring with Oasis

With the ‘Sale’ signs coming down it’s definitely time to start planning our Spring/Summer wardrobe.   Oasis are coming up trumps with some gorgeous girly floral dresses that we can see ourselves merrily strolling through the streets of London in. As long as it doesn’t rain.  Rain-soaked florals: not a good look. Here’s our pick of the bunch.

Piped Floral Print dress, £45.00;  Blue floral dress, £TBC; Graceful flower print shift dress, £60.00; all Oasis.

And here’s a peak at our favourite one as modelled in their campaign. So pretty!

Sixties style

Looking for a little retro inspiration? Step back in time with 60s-inspired pieces available from some of your favourite high street retailers.

There’s something wonderfully feel good about the 1960s. Ok, so it wasn’t all rosy, but they always seem such halcyon days. And the style is seeing a revival. After watching ‘Made in Dagenham’, we’ve fallen for the shift dresses, fabulous false eyelashes and beehive hairstyles all over again.

Left to right: Camel 60s swing dress, Warehouse £35; Diamante trim black shift dress, Topshop £55

The pieces are oh so flattering too. A shift dress can disguise a midriff that’s carrying a few extra chocolate biscuit induced-pounds! An A-line skirt skims over a curvaceous hip. And a big animal print faux fur coat will detract from anything else concealed within it!

Left to right: Animal print 60s tunic dress, Dorothy Perkins £29.50, Leopard print faux fur coat, Biba at House of Fraser. £165

The A-line skirt below ticks so many on-trend boxes. It’s mid-length which is bang on this season. It’s camel coloured – again another trend tick. Plus, it’s got that 60s vibe about it. We love it!

Left to right: Stripe top, Oasis £30; Midi-length A line skirt, Warehouse £45

Now, just grab your false eyelashes (we recommend you have them applied at Shu Uemura, House of Fraser) and start backcombing your hair into a beehive that would impress even Amy Winehouse.

Rihanna’s X Factor look

There was nothing subtle or retiring about Rihanna’s appearance on this week’s X Factor. She was adorned with oversized floral accessories, adding maximum impact to her outfit.

Rihanna wore a stunning William Tempest puffball dress and flashed a pair of frilly knickers underneath. But it was the fabulous floral arrangement that added a unique twist to her look. In typical Rihanna style, she didn’t just add one corsage, she wore a poppy and rose headband and grouped together a number of different corsages on her dress too.

Corsages are a great way to customise a dress, particularly if you want to update an old favourite. Perfect for Christmas party season, you’ll find a wide range of floral accessories in stores now. Go for different sizes, textures and colours. Mix silks, velvets and even woollens with net, sequins or feathers. You’ll also find corsages with prints like checks, florals or this season’s favourite – leopard print.

Left to right: Khaki floral corsage, Dorothy Perkins £6.50; Leopard print corsage, Oasis £6; Sequinned net flower corsage, Dorothy Perkins £8.50

Left to right: Taipei printed ruffle flower clip, Accessorize £10; Rose corsage, Oasis £6; Oversized origami flower, Accessorize £10

Headbands are spot on for a final touch. Have some fun with them. Feathers, net, sequins, bows – they’re all out there for you to try. You don’t have to go for a standout arrangement as large as Rihanna’s, but then again… why not?

Feather net embellished headband, Topshop £30

The red dress

The Autumn/Winter palette is all so neutral this year – camel, grey and khaki are everywhere. But if you want to liven up your wardrobe with a pop of colour, we reckon your best buy is a red dress.

Everyone’s been talking about Mad Men styling and that has filtered down to the high street. There are lots of shift dresses and tailored styles around. They’re great for flattering your womanly curves.

But it’s all about the detail this season too. Look out for ruffles (great for adding detail and volume if you’re flat-chested), cute bows and gathered pleats for added interest.

Clockwise from top left: Bubble shift dress, Topshop £40; Bow shift dress, Oasis £55; Piper shift dress, Coast £95; Ruffleneck shift dress, Wallis £45

The leopard look

Animal print is the statement print for Autumn/Winter. It is everywhere! Unleash your inner leopard and go wild with the print.

Coat £200, dress £45 and snood £25, all from Warehouse

The statement coat is a key piece and a faux fur leopard print number will certainly make a statement. There are great vintage styles around, whether you’re looking for a super-warm winter coat or a  snuggly shorter jacket. A leopard print fur coat or jacket is a one piece wonder which you can throw on for instant glamour.

Left to right: Leopard print faux fur jacket, French Connection £120; Vintage leopard print faux fur coat, Topshop £98

Take one bold print piece, like these skinnies, and contrast them with different textures and layers. Mix with lace and even florals now, then add on chunky knits as the weather gets chillier. Or take a floaty leopard print dress (check out Reiss and Warehouse) and team it with a leather Aviator jacket.

Left to right: Animal print day top, Star by Julien MacDonald for Debenhams £40; Print court shoes, Dorothy Perkins, £25; Leopard print skinnies, Topshop £45; Zip detail print pumps, Oasis £40; Animal print zip detail skirt, River Island £29.99

Is leopard a bit fierce for you? Scared of the bold print? Just go for an accessory. You’ll find bags, shoes, belts, lingerie, hats, scarves, gloves and even bangles featuring the print. There’s no escaping it this season, so be brave and release your inner Bet Lynch.
