Holiday Beauty Essentials

Holidays are wonderful things but if there’s one thing that makes going away a bit of a pain it’s having to leave things behind our beauty products. A lot of women (and men) would agree that ALL beauty items are essential.  Alas, there is a weight limit and if you’re going for hand luggage, a size limit, so we have to cut back. Still here are some of our favourite handy travel items.

All-in-one

Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream is a beauty essential any time of the year and this sun cream pack for £29 from Debenhams is one of our favourites. The After The Rain travellers set from Debenhams is also a very pretty compact pack with all you need.  Plus it’s a steal at £5.62.

Mix and match

If you, like us, are obsessed with all things miniature, stock up on Superdrug’s mini essentials.  Our favourites are the Palmer’s Cocoa butter,  this Ooh La La travel pack of washing and lotioning essentials, the tea tree exfoliating wash which will keep your skin free of dead cells and clear for the sun.  John Frieda’s travel packs for blondes and brunettes are perfect but always take your Batiste dry shampoo in handy travel size just in case.

Can’t live without

If you really can’t bear to be without your products then just take them with you but in handy travel-sized bottles like this spray bottle from Boots for only £1.55 a pop or this pack of four from Debenhams (£7.99).

5 best nail polishes for under £10

We’re big fans of painted nails here at Westfield HQ. We’re always up for trying out the latest shades and brands. We have even been known to try out a new polish at our desks (sshhh, don’t tell!).

If you’re looking for a new nail polish and you don’t want to spend a fortune, we’ve discovered some great brands which won’t break the bank. We recommend them for colour, easy application and they’ll last you for at least a weekend. Best of all, they all cost under £10. We reckon that some of these are equal to, if not better than, some of the much more expensive nail polishes around.

So if you like to update your nail polish to match your latest outfit, we suggest you give these nail polishes a go. They have great new season colours too. Look out for autumnal hues and this season’s nudes and steely greys in particular.

Left to right: Topshop Nails in Cloud, £6; Essie nail polish in Chubby Cheeks, Debenhams £8.95; Rimmel 60 Seconds nail polish in Pompous, Superdrug £3.49; Rituals nail polish in Late Night Ruby, £7.90; Max Factor Max Colour Effects in Red Carpet Glam, Boots £3.95.

Jergens Natural body lotion

Beauty Review: Jergens Naturals – Cocoa butter body moisturiser with vitamin E

Available from: Boots, Superdrug

Price: £4.99 (200 ml)

What it claims to do:
An outstanding light weight 96% natural lotion that immediately transforms dry, thirsty skin with natural moisturisers. Deeply conditions and doubles skin’s natural radiance with cocoa butter, sunflower seed oil and vitamin E.
Cocoa butter has a rich chocolately scent, known to deeply hydrate and tone skin. Sunflower seed oil softens the skin and helps skin maintain its moisture levels. Vitamin E works to help protect skin from free radical damage – a great anti-oxidant.
It applies smoothly, absorbs quickly and lasts all day.

Our reviewer says:
The strongest scent is the cocoa butter which is all good for a chocolate fan like me! You only need to use a little as it’s an incredibly rich lotion. My skin isn’t particularly dry, butthis moisturiser worked a treat on my heels. I think it’s really good value for money.  It applies really easily and the scent lasts all day.

Final verdict:
This is a great moisturising lotion to have on your shelf. It’s a really easy daily usage product that lasts a long time due to the little amount needed.

Johnson’s gel wash

Beauty Review: Johnson’s Face Care – Daily Essentials refreshing Gel Wash for normal skin

Price: £2.99
Available from: Boots,Superdrug

What it claims to do:
‘Daily essentials’ is a complete range of facial cleansers and moisturisers developed with Johnson’s expertise in soft, delicate skin to give you gentle and effective skincare.
Our refreshing gel wash, enriched with essential, skin loving mineral and vitamins gently lifts any impurities whilst caring for normal skin with:
- skin loving minerals known to restore freshness
- vitamin C derivative known for its antioxidant properties
Suitable for sensitive skin

Results:
- Skin is cleansed, feels soft and refreshed.

Our reviewer says:
The Daily Essentials range may be new, but the smell is typically Johnson’s and so felt quite familiar. The gel wash has lots of little pink grainy bits in which are good for exfoliation. The gel’s quite runny and really easy to use.  I found it good if you’re prone to sporadic breakouts.

Final verdict:
My skin definitely felt softer after using it. For me, it’s a product to use in the morning and it’s gentle enough to use every day. I still prefer a normal cleanser-toner routine at night to remove the day from my skin though.

Long live summer

Here at Westfield HQ, we’re not ready for summer to be over. We’re desperate to keep that warm, sunny glow going for a while longer.

When you think of orange make-up, you may think of bad fake tan. Orange skintone is not one we covet. Being Tango’d is so last decade. But, despite what you may think, you really can wear orange make-up. In fact, orange lips look great with a tan. They also work really well on with fair skins – just experiment to find the shade that works for you.

The same can be said for orange eye shadow. Play around to find out what suits you – peach, coral or citrus. Not feeling that bold? Make a statement with some bright orange nail polish.

Left to right: Orange eyeshadow, MAC £11; Orange Nails, Topshop £5; L’Oreal Glamshine lipgloss in Sheer Peach, Superdrug £6.99; Citrus lipstick, Make Up Store £12.50.

Fresh, citrus fragrances can bring back those sunny, holiday memories too. One waft of scent and your mind is cast back to Mediterranean orange groves or even just that fruity cocktail you sipped on from your sunlounger. Orange fragrance is known for its uplifting properties too, so it’s ideal to combat post-holiday blues. Start your day with a citrus-scented shower gel or spray on a luscious perfume, and you’ll feel brighter instantly.

Left to right: Boss Orange Sunset EDT, The Perfume Shop £39.99 (75ml); Satsuma shower gel, The Body Shop £6 (250ml); Sunny shower, L’Occitane £12.50 (250ml); Orange Blossom solid perfume, Lush £5.50.

Kimberley Walsh’s budget beauty buys

We tend to assume that celebs only use the most expensive beauty products. Not the down-to-earth Girls Aloud star Kimberly Walsh it appears. Kimberley loves a budget beauty buy.

Kimberley has revealed the secret to her luscious-looking locks. On tour, she used Supersoft Yogurt and Coconut Smoothie conditioner. It’s available in Superdrug for a mere £1.99! To give you hair a deeper condition, apply the conditioner and then cover your hair with a plastic bag or shower cap, leaving the conditioner to really sink in.

Kimberley’s also a fan of a very purse-friendly cleansing lotion too. The gorgeous Girls Aloud star uses Boots Original Formula Cold Cream to cleanse her skin. It’s a traditional formula that Boots resurrected from the archives. It’s simple but so effective. Plus, it’s only £4.89 (50ml)!

Kimberley’s not the only celeb who likes a simple cold cream cleanser. Kylie does too. When Kylie mentioned that she uses Pond’s cold cream (£3.99 from Boots) regularly, sales of the product soared. Well if cold cream is good enough for Kylie and Kimberley, it’s good enough for us!

Garnier body scrub

Beauty review: Garnier Body Tonic Sugar Scrub

Price: £6.99
Available from: Boots and Superdrug

What it claims to do
Garnier claims that their Sugar Scrub will immediately exfoliate excess dead cells that accumulate on the surface of your skin, leaving it feeling incredibly soft and smooth. The scrub contains active natural ingredients and instantly smoothes the skin whilst respecting it. Its ultra-melting texture leaves the skin soft and toned. The formula contains a unique mixture of sugar, exfoliating particles and natural fruit extract (apple).

Our reviewer says
I received this product as in a Garnier goody bag at the tennis 18 months ago and haven’t looked back. It’s not everyday that a product actually does what it claims to, but this really does leave your skin looking smooth and toned.
I find it does wonders on my thighs and the sugar grains feel lovely when massaged into the skin without leaving any oily residue. I regularly use fake tan and find that this product truly removes all dead skin (especially on your legs) allowing the tan to develop without streaks. It also smells great with a fresh, zesty citrus fragrance!

Final verdict
I would definitely recommend this product. I’ve tried many body scrubs and nothing compares for the price. Follow it up with your favourite moisturiser for silky, soft skin.

Smooth hair styling spray

Beauty review: TRESemme Heat Defence Smooth Styling Spray

Price: £4.29
Where to Buy: Superdrug

What it claims to do
The styling spray guards your hair against heat styling damage and friction, and keeps your hair shiny and incredibly soft. Use it on both dry and wet hair before blow-drying and/or straightening.

Our reviewer says
The spray pump is very generous and just a couple of sprays is enough. You don’t want to use too much (even if you have long hair like mine). You should make sure that this product has dried on your hair before you apply straightening irons (you don’t want to hear a sizzling sound as it means that your hair is burning).

Final verdict
Fantastic! It won’t work miracles – if your hair is already severely damaged it won’t make your hair sleek and shiny overnight. However, after using this product for about a year, I have noticed that the ends of my hair are not as dry as they used to be and I do have less split ends. As for guarding hair from styling damage, I can’t really tell without getting a microscope out, but from what I can see it must be doing something right!
