How to: The Spring/Summer 2011 up do

We loved the slicked back elegant looks on the catwalks of everyone from Oscar de la Renta to Diane von Furstenberg for Spring/Summer 2011.  Not quite a bun, not quite a ponytail and with a touch of Audrey Hepburn about it we look forward to perfecting the look this season. We asked our friends at Toni & Guy to show us how it’s done.

Get the look:

  • Prepare the hair with label.m  Protein Spray and then blow-dry in label.m Volume Mousse to build up a good foundation texture.
  • Back-comb the hair in sections to build volume and use label.m Resurrection Style Dust to create a live-in texture.
  • Place the hair in a ponytail at the back of the head and back-comb the length of the ponytail
  • Place and elastic on the end of the ponytail and then roll under and pin into a bun-like shape, pull bits of the hair out the an un-done finish.  Use label.m Hairspray for hold.

The first 50 people to quote SS11 when booking with Toni & Guy at Westfield London will get a label.m product absolutely free

How to wear bright red hair

Bold, bright hair shades are red hot right now! We’ve seen a number of brunettes vamping up their look and embracing the redhead vibe.

At our Christmas light switch on, Rihanna said that she’d been wanting to go red for a while and she’s loving her new look. We agree – she looks amazing!

Want to follow in the oh so fashion-forward footsteps of celebs like Rihanna and Cheryl? Here are a few words of advice from hair expert, Danny DeFreitas of Toni&Guy Westfield London.

“Rihanna is working a statement red, but dont forget there are so many shades to choose from. It’s important to find the right one for you!

To achieve that kind of colour intensity on a naturally dark shade, like Rihanna’s, hair often needs to be pre-lightened. It’s advisable to get some expert advice to  see which tone of red suits you best. We offer free colour consultations at Toni&Guy, so please visit us.

For people who love being on trend but feel like this all over colour is perhaps too much of a statement, then think about going for some under-colour techniques. Try working glimmers of red throughout the hair or adding panels. You can still create and achieve something gorgeous, but a lot less maintenance.”

Toni&Guy – Shu Uemura hair treatment

Beauty Review – Shu Uemura hair treatment at Toni&Guy

I was lucky enough to be invited by the new Toni&Guy salon to try their new private Shu Uemura room where I received one of their three ceremony treatments.

Shu Uemura private room at Toni&Guy Westfield London

The Shu Uemura private room at Toni&Guy salon

What it claims to do:
Tea ceremonies were invented in Japan as the utmost demonstration of respect and rare quality. It symbolizes the paragon of precision, aesthetics and a philosophy of constantly aiming for perfection. Mirroring the tea ceremony, a Shu Uemura Art of Hair beauty ceremony is an exclusive treatment for unique made-to-measure care and a sensorial journey leaving hair silky soft and your whole body relaxed.

You can choose from the following ceremonies:
Karaa Ceremony – 25 mins of colour enhancing care following an in-salon colour service
Intense Ceremony – 25 mins of intense sensorial care to discover the art of hair beauty ceremonies
Deep Ceremony – 50 mins of in-depth and sensorial care. Just like a massage, you choose the oil with the smell that you prefer, based on what your body needs at the time – either relaxing or energising.

Our reviewer says:
I’ve struggled with my hair condition ever since moving to London from Melbourne where the water is soft and less damaging. I opted for the Deep Ceremony treatment conducted by Danny, a trained Shu Uemura specialist. Danny’s full of Shu Uemura knowledge and is such a pleasure to chat with.

You can choose an invigorating or relaxing cleansing scalp massage, (both inspired by the art of shiatsu). I chose the relaxing option.

First warm scalp oil was massaged into my hair. That was washed out with shampoo and the treatment was applied. My treatment was Silk Bloom which helps to repair damaged hair. Your treatment would be bespoke based on your needs.
The deep treatment was followed by a head, arm and shoulder massage in rhythms of 3 (taken from tea ceremonies). Every product used during the treatment (including the brushes and mixing bowls) are all Shu Uemura, making it feel like a really bespoke and special treatment.

Final verdict:
Not only was I as relaxed as if I’d been for a body massage, but my hair felt absolutely amazing too! My hair had a silk-like feel without being greasy or heavy. I’d definitely recommend this treatment to anyone who wants to improve the condition of their hair. There’s a reason why Shu Uemura products are a hot favourite among celebs like Jennifer Aniston!
Toni&Guy Westfield London is only one of two Toni&Guy salons in the UK to offer the treatment and the only salon to offer a private room. To make a booking phone 0208 749 5899
