Style Notes: Emma Farrow, Design Manager at Topshop

As Design Manager at Topshop Emma Farrow knows a thing or two about style so we asked her to give us her insider guide.

How would you define your own style?
I guess right now it is kind of androgynous, mixed up with pre-war tweeds and ’20s vintage silk blouses.

What makes a person stylish?
A strong sense of personal identity, confidence & awareness of what suits your body shape.

Who is your style-crush right now?
Phoebe Philo, Creative Director of Celine, - I am in love with the Pre-Fall Celine collection! Amazing!

What item can you not live without?
My new Dries van Noten cashmere colour blocked jumper.

Is there anyone or anything that inspires your style?
Vintage inspiration trips with Topshop – usually it is a bargain treasure i find that can inspire a whole different look for the season!

What is this season’s must-have item?
For me it is a good pair of black shorts that will see me through the last of the cold days but will carry on into Summer too. Currently I am coveting some gorgeous drape silk ones from Alexander Wang.

Name one crime against fashion
Lady Gaga’s meat dress! – what was she thinking?!

If you could give one piece of style advice what would it be?
Mix things up a bit to suit your own style… never wear a whole trend head to toe!

London Fashion Week Day 3

In a nutshell: Jasper Conran carried the monochrome look into Autumn Winter with classic tailoring and perfect for the office dresses and flats and thigh high boots in grey and brown and touches of leather and suede (loved this show).  Mulberry impressed with a woodland themed catwalk complete with little dogs on a leash while Topshop Unique went all 101 Dalmations on us.  The final show of the evening held in the British museum was sparkly, pretty, sheer and lovely from Temperley.

Spotted: Celeb favourite Mulberry drew in the likes of Rosamund Pike, Olivia Palermo, Kirsten Dunst, and Clémence Poésy.  Nicole Roberts with a dark-haired Sarah Harding at Vivienne Westwood.  Alexa Chung and Twiggy at Matthew Williamson.

Tweeted: @Susiebubble @Topshop_tweets unique show was amazing… Watching 101 dalmations again tonight!

@iknowwhatyoudid Can’t believe there are people coming to @LondonFashionWk shows who still think black lamé leggings are OK

@HilaryAlexander Am going to need a compass and a helicopter at London Fashion Week today. Shows scattered in venues all over the city

The LFW dictionary: Phenom. (Adj) fashionista version of phenomenal.

David Koma: From LFW to Cheryl Cole to Topshop

Designer David Koma has teamed up with Topshop to create a very exclusive capsule collection.  For those who aren’t so familiar with David Koma’s designs, he’s the man who did this.

Cheryl Cole wore this dress during 2009′s X Factor finals,  dividing critics and giving Simon Cowell something to snigger at during the show (it was apparently rather revealing on the sides).  But it did David Koma no harm, with the dress selling out from stores within the week,  not bad for a designer who’d only graduated a few months earlier.

Now the 25-year-old designer, whose fans also include Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Megan Fox has teamed up with Topshop to create a capsule range (pictured above) of five pieces.

The collection, with items priced between £100 and £350, stays true to his designs with his signature shapes, metalwork and fabrics making this Topshop’s most premium collection to date.  But with only 30 pieces of each of the styles available, it will also be their most limited.

The collection goes on sale from 10 February.

Kelly Osbourne’s fifties’ rebel style

Remember when Kelly Osbourne’s look  was all moody goth? Not anymore.  The little lady has been ticking all the style boxes and no more so than when she stepped out recently looking more Marilyn Monroe than Marilyn Manson.

We love the barbie-doll blonde hair and baby pink  against her skull tattoos, studded bag and a look that says: “Mess with me and die.” Miss Osbourne, we applaud you.  And when we applaud, we steal.

Here’s how to get Kelly’s look:

Pleated shift dress, Rare at Topshop, £44.00;  White Lexis Blazer, LK Bennett, £165; Vintage Henrietta Brooch, Monsoon, £10; Beige platform courts, River Island £64.99; Black Olsen Hoop & stud bag, Mischa Barton at Debenhams £79; Domed Cocktail ring, Jon Richard at Debenhams, £10

Topshop make up for SS11 unveiled

Last night we caught a sneak peak of Topshop’s Spring Summer make-up collection amid cocktails and canapes at the Sanderson hotel in London.  The collection, named ‘Sandstorm’ which includes bronzed, sandy colours alongside neon bright colours is just what we needed to get us in the mood for Spring.

The nail colours in particular could form your entire Spring Summer nail-drobe.  Our personal favourite is a near nude nail polish called ‘No Love Lost’ but the bright orange and reds are definitely ones we’d keep handy for more adventurous days.  The nail colours also come in handy little nail duos which create a marbling effect when used together.

The lipsticks in bright neon colours are one of the hottest trends for the season. Don’t shy away from trying out something a little bold.  Our personal favourite is ‘Infared’, a dazzling burnt orange shade.

We’re also pretty excited by the ‘Dessert Sun’ cheek duo which gives that subtle sunkissed look followed by blusher in ‘Head Over Heels’ is our shade of choice which adds that little touch of colour.

The collection comes to Topshop this month.  Prices range from £5 -£12.

Ballet pumps for embracing your inner swan

There’s one film that has everyone over here very excited.  Actually that’s not entirely true, it is awards season after all and we’ve got a list filled with things we need to get ourselves down to the cinema for.  But the one that’s topping that list is Black Swan, out today.

Golden Globe winner  Natalie Portman and rising star Mila Kunis have put ballet well and truly back in fashion in the Darren Arronofsky dance-based thriller.   It’s made us want to put our hair in a tight bun and start doing jetés across the office.

So, to satisfy our inner prima ballerina, here are four of our favourite ballet pumps in stores now.

Anti-clockwise from left: Miss KG Lola in white £59, Miss KG Licorice £40 in gold, both Kurt Geiger; Camel woven pumps by French sole, £115, Vestry Pink Tie Ballet Pumps, £18, both Topshop.
